Program Description
The SMHS Art department offers an array of courses, allowing students to explore mediums and find their concentration. With beginning and advanced options for each course, students can develop and mature as artists. SMHS offers three AP options for students who have a strong passion for continuing their art studies into the college level. Our department is accessible to all students to explore and direct their artistic journey through their high school years. Students can emphasize in one area or branch out into several areas while they are at SMHS.

The San Marcos Art Department has a comprehensive selection of courses in Drawing, Painting, Sculpture, Photography and Digital Arts and AP Art & Design.

Freehand Drawing // Designed for the student who likes to draw or has an interest in learning to draw. They desire to improve their skills drawing from observation. Students will learn how to use dry media such as graphite, colored pencils, charcoal, soft and oil pastels, and wet media such as ink, watercolors and sketch n’ wash. This class prepares you to be successful in the Painting 1 class. |

Color and Design // Designed for the student who likes to create two and three dimensional works of art using color, shapes, line, patterns, etc. Students will learn how to create compelling compositions and use a wide variety of art materials such as, colored pencils, oil pastels, paper cutting and a variety of paints. |

Photography // Students who like to express themself through photographs and want to learn more about what it takes to make great compositions and compelling images. Learn historical photographic processes, and digital photography using a DSLR camera and Photoshop. |

Sculpture & Metalsmithing// Students who enjoy working with their hands. Students who want to learn how to construct dynamic forms using physical materials such as clay, wire, wood, paper, and board. This class is for students who want to learn metalsmithing techniques like cutting and soldering to make jewelry and other metal works. |

Digital Art and Design // Students who enjoy working with computers and want to learn how to combine art elements and text to create powerful, compelling graphic designs. Students enjoy manipulating photographs and learning new software. This class gives students a great beginning to building a digital portfolio and to gain a strong foundation in web design and animation. |

Painting // Students who are confident in their drawing from observation skills and want to grow their ability in painting. This class is for students who are interested in learning more about painting ideation and learn to use a variety of media including acrylics, gouache, oils, watercolor, inks and dyes. |
