Santa Barbara High School Principal Fred Razo announced his retirement today, effective June 30, 2025.

Razo, who came out of retirement to lead the school two years ago, has made significant strides in improving the campus culture and climate.

A key achievement during his tenure was the successful implementation of a comprehensive cell phone policy. Recognizing the need for a consistent approach across all classrooms, Razo spearheaded the initiative, introducing "cell phone hotels" and establishing clear procedures for managing student phone usage. This innovative approach served as a model for other schools within the Santa Barbara Unified School District and was even highlighted during a recent visit by California First Partner Jennifer Siebel Newsom.

"After careful consideration, I have decided to retire from my role as Principal of Santa Barbara High School at the end of this academic year. It has been an immense privilege to serve our school community during this time. I deeply value the opportunity to once again work alongside our dedicated staff and incredible students. This experience has been truly rewarding, and I am committed to ensuring a smooth transition for the remainder of the school year," said Principal Razo.

Razo has a long and distinguished career in the District, having served in various roles, including Assistant Principal at Santa Barbara High School.

"I want to express my sincere gratitude to Fred for his exceptional leadership and unwavering commitment to Santa Barbara High School," said Dr. Hilda Maldonado, Superintendent. "He stepped in at a critical time and has made a lasting positive impact on our students, staff, and the entire school community. While we will miss him dearly, we wish him all the best in his retirement."

The search for a new principal will commence immediately. District leaders will engage in a comprehensive process, gathering input from staff, families, and students to identify the key qualities and priorities needed in the next leader of Santa Barbara High School.
