Andrew Vogel

My name is Mr. Vogel and I teach beginning sculpture, jewelry and advanced/AP sculpture. I am in my tenth year teaching art here at San Marcos and enjoy every minute of it. I began my love of art at a very early age and received an Associates degree in studio art from SBCC and a Bachelor's degree in studio art from UCSB. I then acquired my art teaching credential from Brandman University. My classes are for students who enjoy designing, constructing, and creating various projects in many different kinds of materials.

Katie Garibay

I was born and raised in Santa Barbara, and attended San Marcos as a student, where I fell in love with the visual arts. I went on to major in Fine Arts with an emphasis in Painting at the College of Creative Studies at UCSB. I earned my teaching credential at Westmont College, and taught elementary school art for three years before making the move to San Marcos, my alma mater, where I teach AP Studio Art & Design, Beginning and Advanced Painting, and Freehand Drawing. I love sharing my passion for art with my students, and inspiring each other in class each day. When I am not teaching, I enjoy creating my own plein air paintings, surfing, and spending time in nature with my husband and children.

Magda Barnes

Visual art made an impact on me throughout my youth, so much so that I decided in high school that I wanted to be an art teacher. I graduated Westmont College with a teaching credential and bachelor in fine art and Boston University with a masters in art education. I have had the opportunity to teach across all grades, kindergarten through college, and am happy to now be part of the San Marcos Art Department team! Over the years, I have taught beginning and advanced classes such as freehand drawing, color and design, ceramics, and printmaking. I enjoy empowering students with the tools and skills to successfully unleash their creativity. .

Walter Bazylewicz

I love teaching art and started my teaching career in 1989. Over the years, I have taught in every grade K through 12 and worked in a variety of school settings from inner city to rural environments. My career has taken me through four different states and five school districts. I am a proud graduate of Michigan State University where I obtained my teaching certification. From MSU, I also acquired a BA in Studio Art, a BA In Video Production, and a MS in Athletic Administration. Eventually, I would add an Educational Administration Certification from Southern Oregon University. Before starting my teaching career, I worked as a graphic designer for a sign company and took on many freelance assignments. Since I started my teaching career, I have worn many hats in the classroom, teaching photography, ceramics, introductory art, yearbook, video production, graphic design, advanced art, and even some subjects outside of the art curriculum. Currently I am excited to teach digital art & design at SMHS.

Michelle Rainville

I love working with students and seeing their creative and artistic skills blossom or grow. I earned my BFA in Graphic Design from CSU Fullerton and worked in that field for ten years. I earned my Art Education credential from CSU Long Beach. I have taught all grade levels and joined the art department at San Marcos in 1996 as the ceramics teacher. I currently teach AP Art & Design, Advanced Painting and Freehand Drawing. Over the years I have enjoyed continuing my own education by taking classes taught by local artists in a variety of printmaking techniques, plein air painting, and mixed media; and traveling to art educator workshops in contemporary painting in Chicago and fiber arts in Kansas City. In my free time you can find me on the ocean paddling with my husband and friends, out on the trails running, or in my yard gardening.

Karol Kolasa

I love having students find their own creativity in the arts. My own art interest started in High School in the Bay Area - where I took 4 years of art with the same teacher, who actually inspired me to later become an art teacher. Art at that time was a tremendous outlet and everyday I looked forward to attending my art class. I hope to bring this feeling to my own students and to foster creativity for those who may not even know that they have some talent in the arts! I graduated from UC Santa Barbara with a BA in Studio Art - and still love to create my own art. I also completed my teacher program at UC Santa Barbara with an ART Teaching Credential. My first Art teaching job was at Palms Springs High School, but now I am back in Santa Barbara enjoying teaching Freehand Drawing and Color and Design at San Marcos High School.
