Pathway Description

Welcome to the San Marcos Health Careers Academy. The Health Careers Academy is a three year program that starts in the 10th grade. Students, however, need to apply for the academy in the 9th grade. In the 10th and 11th grades the students take a variety of courses to prepare them for a career in health care. In the 12th, students choose between two options, our Nursing Pathway and our Pre Med Pathway. The Health Careers Academy will prepare students with the academic and technical foundation to succeed in post-secondary education and/or the healthcare industry. Students will leave the academy as responsible, productive citizens in a global society and will be able to apply their practical knowledge and critical thinking skills to real-life situations. The Health Careers Academy will provide fair and equitable learning experiences to ensure the success of each student and the development of his/her educational and career goals.

Skills Acquired

We have a Health Occupations Students of America (HOSA) student leadership group. HOSA – Future Health Professionals, formerly known as Health Occupations Students of America, is an international career and technical student organization endorsed by the U.S. Department of Education and the Health Science Technology Education Division of ACTE.

Health Careers Academy Instructors

Marcene Tate

My name is Marcene Tate and I am the director of the health careers academy. I have been teaching at San Marcos for the past 24 years and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Currently I am teaching the 11th grade core class, allied health careers and work education. The best way to communicate with me is through email This year I am excited about getting to know all of my students. I enjoy learning about their personalities and sense of humor. One interesting fact about me is that I climbed Mount Fuji with my father and nephew and it was such a beautiful experience.
