After School Program - Meet Our Team

The Santa Barbara Unified School District offers two very different after school programs on elementary school sites and at La Cumbre Junior High School:

  • A year-round subsidized program for children in transitional kindergarten and kindergarten at 6 elementary school sites.
  • ASES/A-OK (After School Education and Safety) programs are on 8 elementary school sites and at La Cumbre Junior High. This program operates on school days only.

The year-round program is funded by the California Department of Social Services and the ASES Program is funded by the California Department of Education, both programs provide subsidized services.

The After School Program for transitional kindergarten and kindergarten operates year-round from school dismissal time to center closing time. The After School Program is offered at Adams, Cleveland, Franklin, Harding, McKinley and Monroe elementary school. The program closes at 5:30 P.M. at each school site. During the summer and on recess days we combine sites between two or three different school campuses. On full days, the program operates from 7:30 A.M. to 5:30 P.M. The students are served a nutritious snack each day during the school year and breakfast, lunch, and snack are served when the centers are open full days. The major focus of the program is to provide a safe, enriching, and educationally-sound environment that supplements and supports the regular school program. Homework, enrichment activities, outdoor organized and free-choice activities, indoor small and large-group activities are offered. During the summers, an academic program is provided and special enrichment themes are used. Field trips and specialists in music, drama, art, and physical education are also added to enhance the curriculum

ASES (After School Education and Safety) Program at La Cumbre Junior High and A-OK! (After School Opportunities for Kids) at Elementary School Sites for students in 1st-8th Grades

The A-OK! Program at Adams, Adelante Charter, Cleveland, Franklin, Harding University Partnership, McKinley, and Santa Barbara Community Academy elementary schools (serving students in grades 1 through 6) and the After School Program at La Cumbre Junior High (serving students in grades 7 through 8) operate every school day until 6 p.m. These excellent programs receive funding from the California Department of Education/After School Division through a statewide initiative, After School Education and Safety (ASES) grant program. Each site is supervised by well-trained staff and offers a structured, engaging array of academic and enrichment activities. Major partners include the Santa Barbara Unified School District, the site schools, and City of Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Department. Each year, various other partners bring special program curricula to the enrolled students. As the lead agency, the Santa Barbara Unified School District administers the program.
