Work Permits

• Complete the B-1 form.
  • The B-1 form states “STATEMENT OF INTENT TO EMPLOY A MINOR AND REQUEST FOR A WORK PERMIT - CERTIFICATE OF AGE” at the top of the page. Some families have submitted the incorrect form, which is often the “PERMIT TO  EMPLOY AND WORK” - please do not use this form to request a work permit.
• Understand that the B-1 form is a legal document produced by the California Department of Education.
  • The work permit request form should be completed in blue or black pen; please avoid using a pencil. Please ensure that your employer completes the entire employer section on the B-1 form before submitting it for approval. We require wet original signatures from all parties. Please ensure your parent/guardian has signed their portion of the permit as well.
  • Legal Requirement: the student's name on the work permit application needs to match their legal identification. If the student has a preferred name on Aeries that does not match their legal name, please include the student's school identification number on the top right corner of the B-1 form for reference.
• Be mindful that processing work permits may take up to 5 business days.
  • The work permit application goes through two school officials for review and approval. Requesting a work permit on the same day is not always feasible, so please plan accordingly based on when the student would like to begin working.
  • Once the work permit is approved, the ‘Home Phone’ number on the work permit application will be called so that the student can pick up their work permit, so please include the best contact number that you can be reached at.  
• SBUnified School District issues work permits to students enrolled in this school district and to eligible students who are homeschooled.
  • Students who are homeschooled must attach a copy of a form of identification and the private school affidavit to their work permit application.
  • Students enrolled in private and charter institutions in California should connect with their school during the academic year to obtain a work permit before the school goes on summer break.
• Minors entering the state from other locales will have to contact the school district local to where they will be staying in California to see if that district will issue them a work permit, even though they are not enrolled there.
  • Local district policy will determine whether a work permit can be issued.
  • Only work permits issued by a California school district are valid in California, ensuring compliance with child labor laws.
• Students who are graduated or 18 years of age or older do not need a work permit to work. 

If all requirements are met, the authorized work permit issuer may issue the work permit to the student.
