Work Permits
California Work Permit Information
Minors employed in the state of California must have a Permit to Employ and Work (commonly referred to as a “work permit”), unless they have graduated from high school. Work permits are typically issued by the school or district where the student is enrolled, which serves to prioritize their education and well-being by restricting the amount of hours they can work while attending school.
The Santa Barbara Unified School District values the importance of students being able to work by following state guidelines, as the safety and health of students is our number one priority. It is solely within the discretion of the school district to determine whether a minor, who is still subject to the state’s compulsory education laws, may obtain a work permit and, therefore, be employed to work.
Students Wishing to Obtain a Work Permit
After obtaining a promise of employment, the student shall obtain the work permit application (i.e. "Statement of Intent to Employ a Minor and Request for a Work Permit - Certificate of Age" (CDE Form B1-1)) to submit to the school or district for review and approval of a work permit.

When issued a work permit, please check the expiration date, so that you can request a new one in a timely manner, as it may take up to 5 business days to receive a work permit.
