Advanced Learning Programs / GATE
The Santa Barbara Unified School District’s philosophy is that all students will reach their full potential through programs designed to meet their needs. The Advanced Learning Program is designed to meet the needs of those students who demonstrate exceptional intellectual capability, and have been identified as gifted and/or greatly exceed grade level expectations. Through differentiated instruction, advanced learning students have equal access to the core curriculum and opportunities to not only meet, but to exceed grade level standards.
Elementary Gifted and Talented (GATE) Program
Elementary Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) programs include GATE cluster groups, GATE pullout and enrichment lessons, and district GATE magnet classrooms at Washington Elementary School.
GRADE 2 OPT OUT FORM
As a practice, all students in grade 2 are automatically screened for GATE at SB Unified. If parents want their 2nd grader to take the GATE test, then they should take no action.
However, if parents do NOT want their 2nd graders tested, they may choose to opt them out of testing. In order to opt your 2nd grader out of GATE testing, families must complete and submit a Grade 2 GATE Opt Out form by the published deadline in the Elementary GATE Guidelines and Qualifying Criteria document, linked here: Grade2 GATE Opt Out form.
GRADES 3-5 REFERRAL FORM
Parents/guardians may choose to refer enrolled students in grades 3-5 for retesting; however, students in grades 4 and 5 may not test if they took the GATE test last year. Parents of eligible students in grades 3-5 may sign up their student to retake the GATE test by submitting a Grades 3-5 GATE Referral form by the published deadline in the Elementary GATE Guidelines and Qualifying Criteria document, linked here: Grades 3-5 GATE Referral form.
