25-26 Literacy Screener

How SBUnified Uses mCLASS to Support Literacy

Beginning in the 2025–26 school year, SBUnified will implement mCLASS as the districtwide universal literacy screener for all K–2 students. This research-based tool provides quick, one-on-one assessments to identify foundational reading skills, screen for indicators of dyslexia, and monitor student progress over time.

Teachers will use mCLASS to analyze student responses in real time, helping them tailor small-group instruction and targeted support based on each learner’s needs, including multilingual students, advanced readers, and those at risk for reading difficulties.

Literacy Screener Committee

Administrators will use mCLASS data to identify trends across classrooms and schools, monitor the effectiveness of instruction and interventions, and ensure early literacy efforts are aligned and responsive to student needs.

Together, SBUnified teachers and administrators will use mCLASS to build strong reading foundations for every student from the start.
