The Educational Services department is responsible for curriculum and instruction, content standards, child development preschool and after school programs, athletics, gifted and talented education program, home and hospital program, independent study and home school programs, student assessment, summer school, higher education collaboration, staff development, and vocation education.

Assistant Superintendent
Dr. Lynne M. Sheffield
Lynne M. Sheffield Ed.D. is the Assistant Superintendent of Education Services in Santa Barbara Unified School District.
She has been in Education for 33 years. Within the last 33 years, Dr. Sheffield has been a teacher for 12 years, high school assistant principal, high school principal, and director. She has received several awards including Western Regional Principal of the Year 2012 and the Association of California School Administrators Student Services Administrator of the Year 2021.
She holds a bachelor of science degree in Exercise Science from the University of Southern California, Master of Science in Administration from Pepperdine University, Master of Arts in Education from CSU Dominguez Hills and a Doctorate in Organizational Leadership from the University of La Verne.
In addition to the duties as a K – 12 educator, Dr. Sheffield combines her experience with her special interest in graduate education programs and teaching new teachers/teacher professional development in higher education.

Denise Alvarado
Denise Alvarado has 20 years of experience as a math teacher, dean of academics, assistant principal, and principal across TK-12 school districts in Orange County.
This past year, Denise served as an leader at SB Unified as the Executive Director of Curriculum & Instruction and for the 2023-24 school year, she will serve as Executive Director of Elementary Education.
She is a UC Davis Alumni committed to capacity building, equity, systems and accountability to achieve greater success for our students, staff and families.

Executive Director of Secondary Education
Sonia Wilson Ed.D.
With 28 years of experience as an English teacher, literacy coach, assistant principal, principal, and director, Dr. Wilson has served as a teacher and administrator in districts within the Central San Joaquin Valley and Southern California’s Conejo Valley.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Fresno State University, a Master’s of Arts degree from Fresno Pacific University, and a Doctorate in Educational Leadership from Fresno State University.
Dr. Wilson brings diverse experiences in the areas of literacy, instruction, assessment, coherence, and leadership development. She is committed to creating equitable systems to support students and staff in ensuring equitable outcomes for all students.

Director of Educational Equity & Multilingual Services
Dr. Deborah Martinez
Dr. Martinez has more than 20 years of experience in education varying at the elementary, junior high and higher education levels. She was an elementary and junior high teacher for 12 years and was recognized as Distinguished Teacher of the Year by the California Association for Bilingual Education (CABE) in 2011. Her administrative experience includes serving as an elementary Assistant Principal, K-12 Coordinator of English Learner Services and K-6th Principal. She served diverse socio-economic populations in various instructional programs including Early Exit Bilingual Education, Dual Language Immersion, Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) and Positive Behavioral Intervention Support systems. She also has experience in adult learning as an adjunct professor in higher education within the teacher credentialing programs.
