Update from Santa Barbara Unified School Board President Laura Capps regarding the search for a new superintendent

Laura Capps headshotDear Santa Barbara Unified School District families and staff,

I hope everyone is staying healthy and safe. I wanted to bring to you all an important update regarding the search for our next superintendent. Now more than ever, it is important to share good news!

My colleagues and I on the school board are encouraged by the high caliber of candidates who have applied to lead Santa Barbara Unified into the future. Due to the unprecedented time in which we live, in late March we extended the application period slightly with a notion that we might have to suspend the search. But those concerns proved unfounded as dozens of qualified people applied; it was as healthy a candidate pool as our search firm had hoped for, prior to the pandemic.

We have now narrowed it down to several candidates under consideration, and will move forward in the coming weeks with interviews. Our next review will be during a special board meeting on May 7th and our goal is to appoint a new superintendent by May 30th. We are well on track for that goal and excited about the prospects, and our future, as a district.

It is an understatement to say that we are living – and parenting, teaching and supporting students – during an unprecedented time. I am grateful for all the ways our community has stepped up and come together.

It’s been wonderful to hear from so many of you about your ideas, concerns, and perspectives with all the challenges we now face.   I welcome that input:  lcapps@sbunified.org
