School Trustees Select Superintendent Search Firm

Santa Barbara School Board Trustees voted unanimously on Tuesday to hire McPherson & Jacobson, L.L.C. as the consulting firm to handle the district’s search for a new superintendent. Cary Matsuoka, who has served as the Santa Barbara schools’ chief for the past four years, will retire in June.

The Omaha, Nebraska-based firm has been conducting national searches for governing boards since 1991. The firm has placed over 750 superintendents and other officials in public and non-profit organizations across the United States and is endorsed by the California School Board Association.

Led by nationally-respected search consultant Ben Johnson II, McPherson & Jacobson have worked with dozens of school districts in California, including handling the 2017 search for a new superintendent in the nearby Cold Spring School District. The board voted to pay the firm $26,500 for the work.

The firm will collaborate with the board, school staff and community stakeholders to design a five-phase search process that meets the unique needs of our school district, including opportunities for staff and family to provide input in a variety of ways.
