McKinley Elementary Students Study School’s Emergency Safety Plan

Students unpacking emergency binsMcKinley Elementary School’s fourth grade students have been very busy over the last three months on Project Based Learning. They have been answering the question, “Earthquake Safe?” Following the Great Shakeout on October 20, 2017, students have been busy making observations, collecting data, and analyzing the McKinley School Safety Plan.

Students discovered that their plan references “an emergency bin,” but does not clarify what it should include. Upon further research of the San Francisco Unified School District Earthquake Plan, students came up with needed items and the cost effective solution of pre-made kits. They then created a keynote presentation which they shared with the school’s principal and PTA. As a result, the PTA agreed to purchase the bins. Students distributed bins to classrooms and will continue to fine tune the McKinley Emergency Safety Plan. The students want to help make sure that McKinley School is emergency ready.
