Principal Shawn Carey to Serve as Assistant Superintendent

Shawn CareyThe Santa Barbara Unified School District Board of Education approved the selection of Shawn Carey, current principal of Dos Pueblos High School, to serve as the district’s assistant superintendent of secondary education. The vote was 4:0. Ms. Carey succeeds Assistant Superintendent Dr. Ben Drati, recently appointed as the superintendent of Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District. Dr. Drati’s last day in the district was December 9, 2016.

Ms. Carey brings 20 years of teaching and administrative experience to the assistant superintendent’s position. She is recognized as an effective written and oral communicator, an instructionally focused leader, a creative problem-solver and mediator, an experienced community builder, and a champion for equity. Ms. Carey has served as the principal representative on Santa Barbara Unified’s Cultural Proficiency and Equity Committee as well as faculty member for the Institute for Equity in Education. She reads, writes, and speaks Spanish fluently.

Shawn Carey will begin work as the district’s assistant superintendent of secondary education, effective January 1, 2017. Bill Woodard will serve as Dos Pueblos High School’s interim principal through June 2017.
