On Saturday, December 10, 2016, 22 McKinley Elementary School students received a bicycle for Christmas. Several organizations (Santa Barbara Bike Coalition, Bici Centro, COAST, Santa Barbara High School Bicycle Club, Cottage Hospital) came together in a community effort to give first-, second-, and third-graders a bicycle and gear. Santa Barbara High’s Bike club repaired bicycles so they could be given to elementary students. Cottage Hospital supplied brand new helmets and goody bags full of supplies. Santa Barbara Bike Coalition, Bici Centro, and COAST organized the event and volunteered to help get children rolling on their new bikes the day of the event.
McKinley School is in its second year of the bicycle program. The program teaches students in grades 2-4 how to ride as well as the rules of the road. The McKinley School staff and families are very grateful that their students are learning valuable life skills and thankful to all of the organizations that are supporting this unique opportunity.
